Nizampatnam is situated on the shore area of Bay of Bengal and prone to natutal calamities. This area is inhabited by socially and economically backward Fishermen Community. Nizampatnam was devastated by Tsunami and many lost their lives in this calamity. Many children became parentless and many women become widows. This permanently made them dependent on the government and local communities for their survival but it is minimal and not able to provide a viable solution for the betterment of their lives.
Programs for Children
Eliazer started a program for the children worst effected by Tsunami by identifying and rehabilitated them by providing temporary shelter, food and clothing. The children so identified are restored to their fractured families but many remained orphans. Some of these children are prepared to access formal institutional support for education, shelter and food security. But this issue needs to be addressed at a much larger scale and Eliazer is working on those lines.
Programs for Women
Many women affected by Tsunami have lost their families and became widows and single women. This thoroughly effected the socio-economic conditions of these women and in many cases lost their livelihoods. In order to support these fisherwomen, Eliazer started a Stitching Training Centre to temporarily restore their household incomes to some extent. Already 150 women have been provided training at this centre and 40 sewing machines were distributed to these trained women to embark on small busiess to support their families especially children. Eliazer made certain arrangements to market the clothes produced by these fisherwomen through their volunteers. But these arrangements are temporary and requires more efforts in restoring the traditional professions of these fisherwomen and build economically viable communities.
